Overview
A Breast Reconstruction Surgeon is a specialist—typically a plastic or oncoplastic surgeon—who performs reconstructive procedures following breast cancer surgery, especially after mastectomy or lumpectomy. Their goal is to restore the shape, appearance, and symmetry of the breasts while maintaining safety and aesthetic outcomes.
Job Description
- Perform reconstructive surgeries after mastectomy or lumpectomy, using implants or the patient’s own tissue (autologous reconstruction).
- Offer a range of reconstruction techniques, including flap procedures (DIEP, TRAM, LD flap), fat grafting, and implant-based methods.
- Collaborate with breast surgical oncologists, planning reconstruction timing (immediate vs. delayed) based on cancer treatment needs.
- Counsel patients on reconstruction options, risks, benefits, and expected outcomes, aligning with individual preferences and health conditions.
- Restore breast symmetry and contour, sometimes involving surgery on the opposite breast for aesthetic balance.
- Monitor postoperative recovery, addressing complications such as implant rejection, wound healing issues, or flap failure.
- Support patients emotionally, helping them regain confidence, body image, and quality of life after breast cancer treatment.
