FAQS

What is the difference between Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS)?

BLS includes non-invasive life-saving techniques such as CPR, AED use, airway management, and oxygen administration. ALS involves more advanced interventions such as intubation, IV medications, and cardiac monitoring, usually performed by paramedics or physicians. EMTs primarily provide BLS-level care.

How do you manage a patient with suspected spinal injury?

The EMT must maintain spinal precautions by stabilizing the head and neck manually and using a cervical collar and spine board if necessary. Movement should be minimized to prevent further injury. Continuous monitoring of airway and neurological status is critical.

What is the role of the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS)?

The Glasgow Coma Scale is used to assess a patient’s level of consciousness based on eye, verbal, and motor responses. Scores range from 3 to 15, with lower scores indicating more severe neurological impairment. It helps in monitoring head injury or altered mental status patients.

What precautions should be taken in trauma cases with severe bleeding?

Apply direct pressure to the wound immediately. If bleeding persists, use a pressure bandage or tourniquet as per protocol. Monitor for signs of shock and ensure rapid transport to a trauma center.

How do you manage a diabetic emergency?

Assess blood glucose levels if equipment is available. If hypoglycemia is suspected and the patient is conscious, administer oral glucose. If unconscious, maintain airway and provide supportive care until advanced help arrives.
