FAQS
What is cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB)?
Cardiopulmonary bypass is a technique where a heart-lung machine temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs during cardiac surgery. It maintains blood circulation and oxygenation while the heart is stopped. Perfusionists operate and monitor the CPB system.
What is the purpose of cardioplegia?
Cardioplegia is a specialized solution used to temporarily stop the heart during surgery. It protects the myocardium by reducing metabolic demand. It can be delivered in cold or warm forms.
What is systemic hypothermia in cardiac surgery?
Systemic hypothermia is used to reduce the body’s metabolic demand during surgery. Cooling helps protect vital organs from ischemic damage. The perfusionist controls temperature using the CPB machine.
What is venous drainage in CPB?
Venous drainage refers to the return of deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart-lung machine. It can occur through gravity or vacuum-assisted systems. Proper drainage ensures efficient circulation.
What is an oxygenator in CPB?
An oxygenator is a component of the heart-lung machine that adds oxygen to the blood and removes carbon dioxide. It functions as an artificial lung during surgery. Modern systems use membrane oxygenators.
