OR
Last updated on 15 Oct 2025
Overview
An Endoscopist is a medical professional who specializes in the use of endoscopy for diagnosing, monitoring, and sometimes treating conditions within the body. Endoscopy involves using a flexible tube with a camera (an endoscope) to view the inside of organs and cavities, such as the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory system, or urinary tract. Endoscopists may perform diagnostic procedures, biopsies, and minimally invasive treatments depending on the type of endoscopy (e.g., colonoscopy, bronchoscopy, or cystoscopy).

Job Description
- Perform Diagnostic Endoscopy – Conduct diagnostic procedures, such as colonoscopies, gastroscopies, or bronchoscopy, to visualize internal organs and detect abnormalities like tumors, ulcers, or blockages.
- Treatment and Biopsy – Take biopsies (tissue samples) during endoscopic procedures to aid in the diagnosis of diseases, and perform therapeutic treatments like removing polyps, cauterizing bleeding vessels, or dilating strictures.
- Patient Preparation and Aftercare – Prepare patients for endoscopic procedures by explaining the process, administering sedatives or anesthesia, and monitoring them before, during, and after the procedure for any complications.
- Interpretation of Findings – Analyze images and videos captured during the endoscopic procedure to identify abnormalities, provide diagnoses, and recommend treatment plans to patients.
- Minimally Invasive Procedures – Use endoscopic techniques for non-surgical treatments, such as removing stones from bile ducts, inserting stents, or performing gastric bypass procedures.
- Collaboration with Other Specialists – Work closely with other healthcare professionals (e.g., gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, surgeons) to coordinate treatment and care for conditions that require endoscopic evaluation and intervention.
- Patient Education and Counseling – Educate patients about the risks, benefits, and expected outcomes of endoscopic procedures, and offer guidance on post-procedure care, lifestyle changes, and follow-up treatments.
