Overview
A Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Physician, also known as a Physiatrist, specializes in diagnosing, treating, and managing patients with physical disabilities or impairments due to illness, injury, or surgery. These physicians aim to restore functional ability and improve quality of life by focusing on non-surgical treatments, rehabilitation strategies, and physical therapy. Physiatrists work with individuals dealing with musculoskeletal, neurological, or cardiovascular conditions to help them regain independence and mobility.

Job Description
- Diagnosis and Assessment – Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients with conditions affecting their ability to move, work, or perform daily tasks. These conditions may include musculoskeletal injuries, stroke, spinal cord injuries, arthritis, or neurological disorders.
- Rehabilitation Treatment Plans – Develop personalized rehabilitation plans that combine physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other therapeutic approaches to help patients recover or adapt to their condition.
- Pain Management – Use non-surgical methods to manage and treat pain, including prescribing medications, physical therapy, and techniques such as acupuncture, nerve blocks, or injections.
- Functional Improvement – Focus on improving patients' functional abilities by prescribing exercises and therapeutic activities to regain strength, mobility, and coordination, aiming for full or partial recovery of physical functions.
- Collaboration with Multidisciplinary Teams – Work alongside physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, nurses, and psychologists to provide comprehensive care that addresses physical, emotional, and psychological needs.
- Assistive Devices and Prosthetics – Recommend and fit patients with assistive devices or prosthetics that can improve mobility or function, such as wheelchairs, braces, or orthotic devices, and provide rehabilitation for their use.
- Patient Education and Advocacy – Educate patients and their families about their conditions, treatment options, and long-term management strategies. Advocate for the patient’s needs within the healthcare system and ensure they receive necessary support.
