Overview
A Scrub Nurse is a specialized registered nurse who works directly within the sterile field during surgical procedures. They are responsible for preparing the operating room, ensuring that all necessary instruments and supplies are sterile and available, and assisting the surgical team by passing instruments during the surgery. Scrub Nurses must maintain strict aseptic techniques and work closely with the surgical team to ensure the procedure runs smoothly and safely. Their attention to detail, understanding of surgical protocols, and ability to work in high-pressure environments are crucial for the success of surgeries.
Job Description
- Preparation of the Operating Room – Ensure the operating room is sterile, organized, and equipped with all necessary surgical tools, instruments, and supplies before the surgery begins.
- Sterilization and Infection Control – Maintain aseptic technique throughout the procedure by ensuring all equipment is sterilized and by managing the sterile field to prevent contamination.
- Instrument Handling – Pass surgical instruments and supplies to the surgeon and surgical team in a precise and timely manner, maintaining a clean and sterile environment.
- Assisting the Surgical Team – Anticipate the needs of the surgical team during the procedure, ensuring instruments are readily available and that the team has everything needed for each step of the surgery.
- Documentation – Record the surgical procedures, ensuring that all used instruments, supplies, and surgical steps are documented accurately for medical records.
- Patient Safety and Monitoring – Assist in ensuring the patient’s safety during surgery, including monitoring patient positioning, maintaining proper lighting, and assisting with any necessary surgical equipment adjustments.
- Post-Surgery Duties – Help with the cleanup and sterilization of the operating room post-surgery and assist in ensuring that any remaining equipment or materials are properly stored for future use.
