FAQS
What are the primary responsibilities of a CTVS ICU Nurse?
A CTVS ICU Nurse provides intensive and highly specialized care to patients who have undergone complex cardiothoracic surgeries such as CABG, valve repair/replacement, congenital heart surgery, aortic procedures, thoracic surgeries, ECMO support, and post-cardiac transplant care. Their core responsibilities include monitoring hemodynamic parameters, ECG rhythms, invasive lines (arterial, central, CVP, PA), ventilator settings, chest drains, pacing wires, urine output, and perfusion status. They manage high-alert medications like inotropes, vasopressors, antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants, sedatives, and insulin infusions while responding swiftly to complications such as arrhythmias, cardiac tamponade, bleeding, low cardiac output syndrome, and respiratory failure. The nurse ensures strict infection control, assists in emergency re-explorations, manages postoperative pain and sedation, documents clinical updates precisely, and coordinates continuously with cardiac surgeons, intensivists, perfusionists, and physiotherapists to provide safe postoperative cardiac care.
How do you ensure safe and high-quality care in a CTVS ICU?
Safe CTVS ICU care involves continuous monitoring, accurate interpretation of cardiac rhythms, timely escalation of abnormal hemodynamics, maintaining sterility around surgical wounds and chest drains, and strict adherence to post-operative CTVS protocols. The nurse ensures ventilator safety, early extubation readiness assessment, prevention of complications like VAP, AKI, DVT, pressure injuries, and surgical site infections. They manage chest tube drainage, observe pacing wire function, monitor coagulation status, maintain precise fluid balance, and collaborate with surgeons and intensivists for early mobilization and post-operative recovery. Effective communication, adherence to protocols like WHO safety guidelines, and meticulous documentation ensure high-quality cardiothoracic intensive care.
How do you manage a post-CABG or post-valve surgery patient in ICU?
The nurse closely monitors vitals, ECG changes, chest drain output, urine output, ventilator settings, and hemodynamics. They titrate inotropes and vasopressors to maintain cardiac output, assess perfusion, prevent arrhythmias, monitor electrolytes, ensure adequate oxygenation, and maintain strict fluid balance. They also support early weaning from the ventilator, ensure sternal precautions, and escalate issues like excessive bleeding or signs of tamponade immediately.
How do you manage patients on temporary pacing wires?
The nurse checks pacemaker settings, monitors capture and sensing, ensures secure wire positioning, prevents dislodgement, and closely observes the patient's rhythm. They prepare for emergency interventions if pacing fails and coordinate with the cardiac surgeon for pacing adjustments or removal when stable.
How do you assess and manage chest tubes post-cardiac surgery?
They monitor drainage volume, color, and pattern, ensure tube patency, check for air leaks, maintain the water seal chamber, prevent kinks, and identify signs of bleeding or clotting. They report abnormal output promptly and assist during dressing changes while maintaining strict sterility.

FAQS
What qualifications are required for a CTVS ICU Nurse?
A CTVS ICU Nurse must have completed GNM, BSc Nursing, or PB BSc Nursing with an active nursing council registration, and hospitals prefer candidates with prior ICU, CCU, or cardiac care experience. These qualifications help nurses manage complex postoperative cardiothoracic patients who require advanced monitoring, ventilator care, invasive line management, pacing support, and close observation after major heart surgeries.
Which cardiothoracic ICU course supports this role?
Useful courses include Post Basic Diploma in Cardiothoracic & Vascular Nursing (CTVS), Critical Care Nursing Certification, Advanced Cardiac ICU Training, Mechanical Ventilation Courses, BLS & ACLS, and workshops in hemodynamic monitoring, chest tube management, and post-operative cardiac care. These specialized programs strengthen skills required for handling invasive monitors, post-operative complications, cardiac emergencies, and ventilator management in CTVS ICUs.
What is the salary of a CTVS ICU Nurse?
CTVS ICU Nurses in India typically earn ₹32,000 to ₹60,000 per month depending on experience, clinical expertise, and the type of hospital. Nurses handling complex surgeries, ventilators, ECMO, and advanced hemodynamic monitoring often receive higher salaries, especially in cardiac institutes and multispecialty corporate hospitals.
Are there CTVS ICU Nurse vacancies?
Yes, CTVS ICU Nurses are in high demand across cardiac hospitals, superspecialty centers, heart institutes, and critical care units of major healthcare networks such as Apollo, Fortis, Max, Narayana Health, Aster, Medanta, and government cardiac departments. Numerous vacancies are regularly posted on LinkedIn, Naukri, Indeed, Job portals, and hospital career pages.
Do CTVS ICU Nurses need cardiac intensive care certification?
Yes, cardiac intensive care certifications such as ACLS, Critical Care Nursing, CTVS Nursing Diploma, and specialized cardiac ICU training are highly preferred and often required. These certifications demonstrate competence in managing post-operative cardiac patients, handling emergencies, and providing safe and effective cardiothoracic intensive care.
