Overview
An Operating Room Nurse, also known as an OR Nurse or Operation Theatre Nurse, is a specialized nursing professional who provides patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures. Their role focuses on preparing the operation theatre, assisting surgeons and anesthetists, maintaining sterile conditions, monitoring patient safety, and ensuring smooth surgical workflow. Operating Room Nurses play an important role in hospitals because surgeries require precise coordination, infection control, emergency readiness, and continuous patient monitoring. They help maintain safety standards and support successful surgical outcomes. These professionals commonly work in multispeciality hospitals, trauma centers, cardiac hospitals, maternity hospitals, orthopedic hospitals, day-care surgery centers, and specialty surgical units.
Job Description
- Preoperative Care – Prepare patients for surgery by conducting preoperative assessments, reviewing medical histories, explaining the surgical process, and ensuring all necessary documentation is completed.
- Sterile Field Maintenance – Ensure a sterile environment in the operating room by assisting with the setup of surgical instruments and maintaining the integrity of the sterile field throughout the procedure.
- Assisting in Surgery – Provide direct assistance during surgery by passing instruments, sponges, and sutures to the surgeon, as well as maintaining surgical counts to prevent foreign objects from being left inside the patient.
- Monitoring Patient Safety – Continuously monitor the patient’s vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, etc.) during the surgery, alerting the surgical team to any changes that may indicate a potential complication.
- Postoperative Care – Assist in the recovery process by monitoring patients in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), helping with pain management, and providing care instructions to ensure proper recovery after surgery.
- Collaboration with Surgical Team – Work in tandem with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical techs, and other operating room personnel to ensure that procedures run smoothly, ensuring patient safety, comfort, and positive outcomes.

FAQS
How would you prepare an operating room before a major surgical procedure?
An Operating Room Nurse should verify sterilization of instruments, ensure availability of required surgical equipment, check patient records, confirm consent forms, and prepare medications and supplies. They must maintain a sterile environment and coordinate with surgeons, anesthetists, and technicians before surgery begins. Proper preparation reduces delays, supports patient safety, and helps the surgical team work efficiently.
How do you handle stressful situations during emergency surgery?
During emergency procedures, an OR Nurse must remain calm, focused, and organized. They should prioritize urgent tasks such as instrument setup, patient positioning, monitoring sterile technique, and assisting the surgical team rapidly. Clear communication and quick decision-making are essential. Remaining composed under pressure helps maintain safety and workflow.
Why is sterile technique critical in the operating room?
Sterile technique prevents contamination of surgical instruments, wounds, and operating surfaces. It significantly reduces the risk of surgical site infections, complications, and prolonged hospital stay. OR Nurses are responsible for maintaining sterility throughout the procedure and correcting any breaks immediately.
How would you respond if a surgical instrument count is incorrect?
The nurse should immediately inform the surgeon and surgical team, stop closure if necessary, and repeat the count carefully. The operating area, waste materials, and instrument trays should be checked. If the item remains missing, imaging may be required. Accurate counts are essential to prevent retained surgical items.
What qualities are important for success as an Operating Room Nurse?
Important qualities include attention to detail, physical stamina, teamwork, communication skills, emotional control, and the ability to work under pressure. Strong infection-control knowledge and commitment to patient safety are also essential.
