Overview

A TMJ Disorder Specialist is a healthcare provider—often a dentist, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, or orofacial pain specialist—with expertise in diagnosing and treating disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and surrounding muscles. These disorders can cause jaw pain, headaches, limited jaw movement, and clicking sounds, often requiring a multidisciplinary treatment approach.

Job Description
  1. Evaluate patients with TMJ symptoms using clinical exams, imaging (e.g., X-rays, MRI, CBCT), and patient history.
  2. Diagnose TMJ disorders, including muscle pain (myofascial pain), joint derangement, arthritis, or trauma-related dysfunction.
  3. Develop individualized treatment plans involving conservative therapy (splints, physical therapy), medications (NSAIDs, muscle relaxants), or surgery if needed.
  4. Provide non-surgical management, such as occlusal splints (bite guards), trigger point injections, and behavioral modifications.
  5. Collaborate with other specialists, including physiotherapists, ENT doctors, psychologists, and neurologists, for complex or chronic cases.
  6. Educate patients on self-care strategies, posture, stress reduction, and habits that contribute to TMJ pain (e.g., teeth grinding, gum chewing).
  7. Stay current on evidence-based approaches and emerging therapies like arthrocentesis, Botox injections, or minimally invasive TMJ surgery.
