Overview
An HPB Anesthesiologist is a specialist anesthesiologist who provides perioperative anesthesia care for patients undergoing hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgeries, including liver, pancreas, and biliary tract procedures. These surgeries are often complex and high-risk, requiring deep expertise in hemodynamic management, fluid therapy, and organ-specific considerations.
Job Description
- Conduct thorough preoperative assessments, evaluating liver and pancreatic function, coagulation status, and anesthesia risk.
- Administer tailored anesthesia plans for complex HPB procedures, adjusting for factors like cirrhosis, jaundice, or portal hypertension.
- Manage intraoperative monitoring and support, including advanced hemodynamic monitoring, central venous pressure (CVP), and arterial blood gases.
- Handle massive fluid shifts and blood loss, coordinating transfusions, fluid resuscitation, and coagulation management during major liver or pancreatic resections.
- Support postoperative pain management and ICU care, ensuring a safe transition from surgery to recovery with minimal complications.
- Work closely with HPB surgeons and critical care teams to align anesthesia strategies with surgical goals and patient conditions.
- Address organ-specific complications, such as hepatic encephalopathy, pancreatic leaks, or biliary sepsis, with vigilant intraoperative management.
