Incoming materials should be checked against the purchase order, delivery documents, and packing list. Quantity, product identification, packaging condition, and visible damage should be verified. Any discrepancy or damage should be documented and reported to the appropriate supervisor.

FIFO means First In, First Out, where material received earlier is issued before newer material. This approach helps maintain proper stock rotation and reduces the risk of materials remaining in storage for unnecessarily long periods. In some industries, FEFO may be used instead, where items with the earliest expiry date are issued first

The physical stock should first be recounted and compared with system records and supporting documents. Recent receipts, issues, transfers, and dispatches should then be checked to identify the possible cause. The discrepancy should be documented and reported according to company procedures.

Safety procedures should be followed when lifting, moving, storing, and handling materials. Appropriate personal protective equipment should be used where required, and equipment such as forklifts should only be operated by trained or authorized personnel. Walkways, storage areas, and emergency exits should remain clear.

A Warehouse Management System, or WMS, is software used to manage and track warehouse activities. It can support receiving, storage locations, inventory tracking, picking, packing, and dispatch. Accurate data entry is important because system records should match physical inventory.

Educational requirements vary by employer and industry. A 10+2 qualification, ITI, diploma, or equivalent education may be sufficient for many entry-level roles, while pharmaceutical and specialized warehouses may prefer candidates with relevant technical qualifications and experience. Additional training in material-handling equipment, inventory systems, or warehouse operations can be advantageous.
