Overview
A Liver Transplant Pathologist is a medical doctor and pathology expert who specializes in evaluating liver tissue from transplant procedures. Their expertise is essential for guiding post-transplant management and ensuring graft survival.

Job Description
- Examine liver transplant biopsy specimens to detect acute or chronic rejection, infection, or recurrence of original disease.
- Provide real-time intraoperative assessments, such as frozen sections, to support surgical decision-making during transplant procedures.
- Collaborate with transplant hepatologists and surgeons, offering timely and accurate diagnoses to guide immunosuppressive therapy and post-op care.
- Differentiate complex pathologies, such as drug-induced liver injury vs. rejection, using histology and advanced techniques like immunohistochemistry.
- Contribute to transplant protocols and quality control, helping ensure standardized biopsy processing and reporting practices.
- Participate in transplant-related research and teaching, especially in academic or high-volume transplant centers.
