Senior Resident - Pathology

Cytology studies individual cells or small clusters from body fluids, fine needle aspirates, or smears. Histopathology examines whole tissue architecture from biopsies or surgical specimens. Cytology is less invasive and faster, but histopathology provides more detailed structural information.

Hematoxylin and Eosin are standard for tissue morphology. Special stains include PAS (for glycogen and fungi), Masson’s Trichrome (for fibrosis), Ziehl-Neelsen (for acid-fast bacilli), and Giemsa (for parasites). Each stain highlights specific tissue components or microorganisms.

Molecular pathology identifies DNA, RNA, and protein changes in disease. It is used for diagnosing genetic disorders, detecting infectious agents, guiding targeted cancer therapy, and assessing prognosis through techniques like PCR or NGS.

Immunohistochemistry uses antibodies to detect specific antigens in tissues. It is used to classify tumors, identify infectious agents, determine hormone receptor status in cancers, and distinguish cell lineage in hematologic malignancies.

Quality control measures include regular equipment calibration, verification of reagents, internal and external proficiency testing, proper sample labeling, duplicate testing for critical results, and adherence to SOPs, which are key to maintaining quality and accuracy.

The eligibility criteria for Senior Resident - Pathology Candidates must have an MD (Pathology) or equivalent postgraduate degree recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI). Some institutions may also accept candidates with a DNB (Pathology) degree.

Senior Residents in Pathology work primarily in government and private hospitals, medical colleges, research institutions, and specialized diagnostic or pathology laboratories. They may also be involved in teaching undergraduate or postgraduate medical students in academic institutions.

Strong diagnostic skills, proficiency in histopathology, cytology, and laboratory techniques are essential. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, familiarity with immunohistochemistry and molecular pathology, and good communication skills for reporting and teaching are also important.

Candidates with a postgraduate degree in Pathology (MD/DNB) are expected to have three years of experience in residency, and can become senior resident doctors.
