Overview
A Thoracic Surgery Specialist is a surgeon who specializes in operative treatment of diseases in the chest, excluding the heart (unless also trained in cardiothoracic surgery). This includes surgical management of lung cancer, esophageal cancer, mediastinal tumors, tracheal disorders, and chest wall abnormalities. They work closely with pulmonologists, oncologists, and critical care teams to provide comprehensive care.
Job Description
- Perform surgical procedures on the lungs, esophagus, mediastinum, trachea, pleura, and chest wall for cancer, infection, trauma, and congenital disorders.
- Use minimally invasive techniques, such as VATS (Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery) and robotic-assisted thoracic surgery, to reduce recovery time and complications.
- Diagnose thoracic conditions through biopsies, endoscopic procedures (e.g., bronchoscopy, mediastinoscopy), and advanced imaging interpretation.
- Collaborate with oncology teams to provide surgical management of thoracic cancers, especially lung and esophageal malignancies.
- Manage postoperative care, including pain control, respiratory therapy, and complication management (e.g., air leaks, infections).
- Handle emergency surgeries, such as for traumatic chest injuries, collapsed lungs (pneumothorax), or life-threatening infections.
- Participate in preoperative counseling, explaining risks, benefits, and long-term outcomes to patients and families.
