This specialist focuses on understanding the pathophysiology, providing personalized treatment strategies, and improving the quality of life for patients affected by this condition.
Job Description
- Diagnose and monitor hepatic encephalopathy, evaluating patients' cognitive and neurological function through clinical examination, ammonia levels, and neuroimaging as needed.
- Develop treatment plans to manage the underlying causes of HE, including addressing liver dysfunction, infections, gastrointestinal bleeding, or electrolyte imbalances.
- Administer pharmacologic therapies, such as lactulose, rifaximin, or other agents, to reduce blood ammonia levels and improve neurological function.
- Collaborate with hepatologists, intensivists, and transplant teams to manage patients with severe or recurrent hepatic encephalopathy, especially those requiring liver transplantation.
- Implement advanced monitoring techniques, such as encephalopathy grading scales, electroencephalography (EEG), and liver function tests, to assess treatment response and adjust management.
- Educate patients and caregivers about disease management, lifestyle modifications, and the importance of managing cirrhosis and liver disease to prevent encephalopathy episodes.
- Conduct research on new therapies, diagnostic markers, and innovative approaches to understanding the pathophysiology of hepatic encephalopathy, contributing to the academic and clinical development of the field.
