Overview
A Sexual Medicine Specialist is a medical professional who focuses on diagnosing, treating, and managing disorders related to sexual health, function, and dysfunction. These specialists address a wide range of issues, from erectile dysfunction (ED) and premature ejaculation to low libido, sexual pain, and emotional concerns that affect sexual well-being. They work with both men and women, providing evidence-based treatments, therapy, and counseling for individuals and couples facing sexual health challenges. Sexual Medicine Specialists often have backgrounds in urology, gynecology, endocrinology, psychiatry, or psychology and may work in multidisciplinary teams to provide holistic care.

Job Description
- Diagnosis and Treatment of Sexual Dysfunction
- Diagnose and treat sexual dysfunctions in both men and women, including erectile dysfunction (ED), premature ejaculation, low libido, painful intercourse (dyspareunia), and anorgasmia (inability to achieve orgasm). Treatment may involve medications (e.g., sildenafil, hormone therapy), lifestyle changes, or counseling.
- Sexual Health Counseling
- Provide individual or couple counseling to address emotional and psychological aspects of sexual health, such as performance anxiety, relationship issues, trauma, and body image concerns. Offer support to help patients navigate sexual difficulties caused by stress, anxiety, depression, or past experiences.
- Management of Hormonal Imbalances
- Evaluate and manage hormonal imbalances (e.g., low testosterone, thyroid disorders) that may affect sexual function. Prescribe hormone therapies or medications as necessary to restore hormonal balance and improve sexual health.
- Sexual Pain Disorders Treatment
- Assess and treat conditions that cause sexual pain, such as vaginismus, vulvodynia, or pelvic pain in women, and Peyronie’s disease or chronic prostatitis in men. Use a combination of physical therapy, psychological interventions, and medical treatments to alleviate pain and discomfort.
- Sexual Education and Prevention
- Educate patients about healthy sexual practices, consent, communication, and the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Offer resources on maintaining sexual health and well-being across the lifespan, and provide advice on safe sexual practices.
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including urologists, gynecologists, endocrinologists, psychologists, and physical therapists, to provide comprehensive care for patients experiencing sexual health issues. Work together to offer the most effective treatment options, including both medical and non-medical approaches.
- Advanced Diagnostics and Treatment
- Utilize diagnostic tools such as hormone testing, pelvic examinations, ultrasound, and psychological assessments to evaluate sexual health conditions. Employ treatments ranging from medical therapies and psychotherapy to surgical interventions (e.g., penile implants, vaginal surgery) when appropriate.
