Lung Transplant Surgeon

A Lung Transplant Surgeon is a highly specialized thoracic surgeon who performs lung transplantation procedures for patients with end-stage lung diseases, such as pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, COPD, or pulmonary hypertension. They are part of a multidisciplinary transplant team and are responsible for the surgical removal of diseased lungs and implantation of donor lungs.

1. Perform lung and heart-lung transplants, including single or double lung transplantation, using advanced surgical techniques.
2. Evaluate transplant candidates, assessing disease severity, overall health, and suitability for transplantation in coordination with pulmonologists.
3. Harvest donor organs, sometimes traveling to donor sites to retrieve and preserve lungs for transplant.
4. Coordinate with transplant teams, including pulmonologists, anesthesiologists, immunologists, and critical care specialists for perioperative care.
5. Manage post-transplant complications, such as graft rejection, infection, and airway complications, ensuring long-term graft survival.
6. Monitor and guide recovery, working closely with transplant coordinators, physical therapists, and immunosuppressive therapy teams.
7. Participate in transplant program development and research, including improving outcomes, donor utilization, and innovations in surgical technique.
