Assistant Professor - Pharmacology

Clinical trials are conducted in four phases. Phase I evaluates safety and dosage in healthy volunteers. Phase II assesses efficacy and side effects in patients. Phase III confirms effectiveness and monitors adverse reactions in large populations. Phase IV occurs post-marketing to monitor long-term effects and rare adverse events.

Pharmacokinetics refers to what the body does to the drug, including absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME). Pharmacodynamics refers to what the drug does to the body, including the mechanism of action, therapeutic effects, and adverse effects.

Bioavailability is the fraction of an administered drug that reaches systemic circulation in its active form. It is calculated by comparing the area under the curve (AUC) of the drug concentration-time graph for oral versus intravenous administration.

Therapeutic drug monitoring involves measuring drug concentrations in blood to maintain a therapeutic range. It is especially important for drugs with a narrow therapeutic index, such as phenytoin, digoxin, and lithium.

Pharmacovigilance is the science of detecting, assessing, understanding, and preventing adverse drug reactions. In India, it is monitored under the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India, coordinated by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission.

Candidates must have an MD in Pharmacology to work in medical colleges recognized by the National Medical Commission. For pharmacy colleges, an M.Pharm or Ph.D. in Pharmacology is required as per the norms of the Pharmacy Council of India.

An Assistant Professor in Pharmacology is responsible for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students through lectures, practical sessions, and tutorials. They guide students in research projects and dissertations, especially MD or M.Pharm scholars.

Strong subject knowledge in general and clinical pharmacology is essential. The faculty member should possess effective communication and presentation skills for classroom and seminar teaching. Research skills, including study design, biostatistics, and scientific writing, are important for publications and grant applications.

Assistant Professors in Pharmacology are hired by government and private medical colleges, deemed universities, and pharmacy colleges across India. Premier institutions such as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research regularly recruit pharmacology faculty.
