A Junior Consultant Neurosurgeon prioritizes rapid neurological assessment, stabilization of airway, breathing, and circulation, and urgent imaging such as CT or MRI. Emergency protocols are followed strictly, with immediate communication to senior consultants, anesthesiology, and ICU teams. Responsibilities include pre-operative neurological evaluation, imaging review, risk stratification, patient counseling, consent support, and surgical preparation. Post-operatively, the Junior Consultant monitors neurological status, manages complications, coordinates ICU care, adjusts medications, and plans rehabilitation and follow-up.

Neuroimaging is reviewed systematically, focusing on lesion location, size, mass effect, midline shift, hydrocephalus, spinal cord compression, and hemorrhage patterns. Imaging findings are correlated with clinical symptoms to determine urgency and surgical approach, with senior consultation for complex cases.

In the operating theatre, responsibilities include maintaining aseptic protocols, assisting or performing procedures under supervision, handling microsurgical instruments, assisting in craniotomies, spinal surgeries, trauma cases, and ensuring proper patient positioning and intraoperative monitoring. Documentation and post-operative handover are also key duties.

Candidates must complete MBBS, followed by MS General Surgery or directly MCh Neurosurgery / DNB Neurosurgery as per training pathway. Valid NMC or State Medical Council registration is mandatory. Fellowship exposure or specialized training in spine surgery, neurotrauma, or neuro-oncology provides additional advantage.

In India, Junior Consultant Neurosurgeons typically earn between ₹15 lakh and ₹30 lakh per annum, depending on hospital type, city, on-call duties, and surgical exposure. Corporate hospitals and trauma centers may offer additional emergency duty or procedure-based incentives.
