Overview

A four-year undergraduate program that focuses on patient evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of ocular diseases, visual disorders, and refractive errors. Optometric medicine, clinical vision science, and vision care therapy are synonyms. Students learn ocular anatomy, contact lens fitting, low vision rehabilitation, binocular vision, and public eye health.  Theory, clinical practicum, community service, and lab training are all incorporated into the curriculum. Graduates are skilled in eye examinations, prescribing spectacles and lenses, and identifying ocular pathologies.  Optometric boards or councils are frequently a part of accreditations. Patient communication and ethical behavior are emphasized. A major part consists of clinical internships in hospitals and specialty eye clinics. In many places, the program ends with a licensing or board exam.
