19 Jun 2025

Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, an otolaryngologist from Flint, Michigan, was inaugurated on June 10 as the 180th president of the American Medical Association (AMA). A seasoned leader within the organisation, including chairing the AMA’s substance use and pain care task force and receiving the AMA Foundation’s Excellence in Medicine Leadership Award—Dr. Mukkamala brings both professional and personal insight to his new role, especially following his recent brain tumour diagnosis. Having navigated the healthcare system as both physician and patient, Dr. Mukkamala now champions addressing healthcare inequities and reducing administrative burdens like prior authorisation that impact patient care. His leadership agenda emphasises the AMA's collaborative approach, where nearly 1,000 doctors from every state and specialty contribute to policy development through the House of Delegates.
